Why This Directory Exists
If you search for "rabbit rescue in Florida," you'll find a scattered mix of Facebook pages, outdated Petfinder listings, and organizations that may or may not still be active. There's no single, reliable place to compare Florida's rabbit rescues based on objective, publicly verifiable information.
This directory was created to fill that gap: a free, independently maintained resource that presents facts without ranking, scoring, or promoting any individual organization.
We are not a rabbit rescue ourselves, merely a directory.
Who Maintains This Site
This directory is maintained by Alexander Lee, a software engineer in Florida and rabbit owner. It was built out of a personal commitment to rabbit welfare and a belief that prospective adopters deserve access to clear, verified information. Alexander is not affiliated with any rescue organization, House Rabbit Society, or Rabbit.org Foundation.
How Organizations Are Selected
To be included in the main directory, an organization should meet the following criteria:
- Florida-based: Actively operating in the state of Florida
- Rabbit-focused: Primary mission involves rabbit rescue, rehabilitation, and/or adoption (multi-species organizations where rabbits are not a primary focus are listed separately)
- Currently active: Evidence of ongoing rescue operations (website, social media activity, Petfinder/Adoptapet listings)
We also look for 501(c)(3) status confirmed through the IRS Business Master File or GuideStar, though it is not a strict requirement for inclusion. Each listing clearly indicates whether 501(c)(3) status has been confirmed, so visitors can make their own informed decisions.
How Information Is Verified
Every listing is verified against multiple publicly available sources:
- IRS Business Master File: to confirm 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status and EIN
- GuideStar (Candid): for transparency ratings, 990 filings, and governance information
- Florida Division of Corporations (Sunbiz): for incorporation status, filing dates, and registered principals
- Organization websites and social media: for mission statements, board listings, and current activity
- Petfinder and Adoptapet: for evidence of active rescue operations
Mission statements are presented verbatim wherever possible, sourced directly from the organization's website or public filings.
How Often Is This Updated?
The directory undergoes a full verification cycle regularly. Individual corrections and updates submitted through the contact form are reviewed on an ongoing basis.
